The X12 extension file is a type of format used with EDI X12.

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) X12 is a messaging standard developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for the electronic interchange between industries of commercial transactions.

The X12 Accredited Standards Committee is a standards organization, chartered by the American National Standards Institute in 1979, which develops and maintains the X12 Electronic data exchange and Context Inspired Component Architecture standards.

X12 works in conjunction with XML schemas which together drive business processes globally.

X12 is basically a message format standard used for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) documents.

It is used by trading partners to share business documents in a standard and agreed format.

X12 is the most common EDI standard used in the United States.

The purpose of an ANSI X12 file (and standard) is to regularize the standards for electronic interchange between industries by being a global set of rules for the interchange of electronic data between trading partners.
